Our Benevolent Fund allows each employee to contribute monthly towards assisting “our extended families” at least three times a year for Easter, back to school and Christmas activities. All contributions are matched by the company.

Memorial Scholarship
Award!

Each year, the Kregg Nurse Memorial Scholarship Award is presented to a disabled person who successfully completed at least one year of post-secondary school education, in any field. The awardee must also confirm the continuation of their formal education at a tertiary institution.

Since 2005, Caribbean Catalyst Inc. has spearheaded the selection and recognition of scholarship awardees in honour of Kregg Nurse. Nurse was a former employee of Ernst and Young who never allowed his disability to become an inability.

Ros Jackson, Managing Director of Caribbean Catalyst Inc. and former partner at Ernst & Young, was instrumental in hiring Kregg and
recalled that when she met him in 1997, he was an amazing source of inspiration for her to “get more involved” in working with people who are differently abled.

Kregg Nurse from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounts and subsequently became a Certified General Accountant. Kregg was intelligent and excelled in his studies, always determined to never allow challenges to deter the achievement of his goals.

Kregg was also known for his fun-loving nature as he enjoyed socialising and often brought vibrancy to the events he attended. Kregg sadly passed away in 2004 at the age of 27.

Caribbean Catalyst Inc. remains committed to celebrating the memorable life of Kregg through this annual scholarship and its beneficiaries. In collaboration with his mother, Mrs. Linelle Nurse, our goal is to use Kregg’s legacy to encourage students with disabilities to continue their education and preparation for meaningful employment opportunities.

In Memory of Wesley King – 2006 Winner of Kregg Nurse Scholarship Award

He was committed to his professional and personal development. Wesley pursued his Bachelor’s degree at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

Despite challenges as a quadriplegic, he successfully graduated with a distinction in Information Technology. Wesley would be remembered as an ‘incredible young man’ who like Kregg, showed “that his physical disability in no way limited his ability to achieve his goals.”

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES

Marcia is a student of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Banking and Finance and is in her second year of the programme. She is expected to complete her studies in 2025 and looks forward to pursuing her Masters in Financial Economics or Trade Policy. At fifty-one (51) years old, Marcia experienced a horrific health challenge which changed her life’s trajectory. Marcia was practicing law in the United States and was on the path to building her own practice. On June 6, 2016, she was diagnosed with Sepsis which caused her to experience multiple strokes. The strokes resulted in limited mobility in her left hand and minimal use of her left foot. Marcia shared that the rehabilitation process was difficult but she remained focused and committed to the process. Based on the many challenges she encountered, Marcia opted to return to Barbados to her family and to continue physical therapy. Marcia aspires to work with the Government of Barbados, in a capacity where she can assist with crafting trade policies and legislation between Barbados and International countries.

Pamela is a student of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and is in the final semester of the programme. During her pursuit of the degree, Pamela was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) which affected her mobility. Despite challenges, she is determined to finish her degree by December 2022 and complete the qualification, Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Pamela is currently employed with the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus and her goal is to further her career with the institution.

“It is with a heart of gratitude that I express thanks to Caribbean Catalyst Inc. for your unwavering dedication in supporting the Kregg Nurse Memorial Scholarship. Multiple sclerosis (MS) indeed had delayed the completion of my degree programme, but I never gave up. This scholarship would offer assistance in covering the financial expenses associated with completing the degree. In addition, it is with extreme gratitude to my heavenly Father who has kept me strong mentally and physically, so that I can continue to pursue the Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and other goals I have. I encourage anyone who has a disability to never stop dreaming and pursuing those dreams. You are here for a purpose! You are capable of accomplishments and achievements.”

Brianna is an ambitious, positive and determined twenty-one year old student of the Barbados Community College (B.C.C). She has completed the first year in the Associate Degree in Visual Arts and aspires to be a Graphic Designer. She is passionate about her chosen career and is eager to showcase her creativity. Brianna was diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy but further testing revealed a rare neonatal disorder that affected her motor skills and speech. Although she has faced many challenges in life and during her studies, she remains optimistic and does not allow her condition to deter her from achieving her goals. Brianna is a self-motivated student who enjoys learning new graphic designing concepts and skills. In her spare time, she likes to keep abreast of current affairs.
BRIANNA SKEETE, 2021 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEE

“Being one of the many recipients of the Kregg Nurse Scholarship has been incredible, and I will be eternally grateful for this honor. This scholarship award has assisted me in acquiring the equipment I required to further improve and develop my skills, as well as making it much easier to do work in a less strenuous manner. Concerning my studies, I have finally been able to propel myself further across the finish line of obtaining my Associate Degree and I am very excited to be so close and succeeding despite any obstacles that have been placed in my path. In addition, I am setting another goal of pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in a field in which I am interested, with all of the necessary equipment and support.”

In spite of her blindness, Hyacinth is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Degree in Management at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Hyacinth encourages persons with a similar disability to be confident, “Do not be afraid to try things on your own.”

“The scholarship has benefited me with the opportunity to pay my tuition fees, purchase a laptop so I can record notes during class, and with transportation costs mainly for evening lectures.”

While a student at the Barbados Community College in 2014, Tyrell was involved in a vehicular accident that left him paralysed. However, this setback did not prevent Tyrell from completing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Banking and Finance at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. In 2021, Tyrell graduated with first class honours.
He believes that the scholarship provides necessary financial resources for persons with disabilities and creates opportunities for the disabled community to break barriers. He is grateful for the opportunity to further develop his academic career.

Grenadian, Dwain Clarke, graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Degree in Economics and Finance from The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Dwain is partially deaf in both ears. He is actively seeking employment in his field.

“The scholarship helped me to pay for registration fees, textbooks and accommodation when I had little support. Being a recipient of the award, I was able to successfully secure an internship at a financial institution in Barbados. I am truly grateful for the opportunities that the scholarship provided and the shaping of my professional attitude.”

Although she has a spinal tumour, Janelle pursues her studies part time and is in her second year at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill. She is also a full-time employee at Massy Stores Barbados Ltd.
Janelle remained focused and committed to achieving her academic goals. She is an active member of the West Indies Cave Hill Association for Persons with Disabilities (UWICAPD) as the second Vice President, and recently joined the Board of Directors for the Barbados Wheelchair Association.
JANELLE SKINNER, 2016 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEE

“The scholarship has benefitted me tremendously as it has provided me with assistance towards purchasing books for the upcoming semesters. I was also able to make payments towards my tuition.”

When we met Ke-anne, she was enrolled at the University of West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Law. She was one of three recipients of the 2015 Kregg Nurse Scholarship Special Award. Ke-anne is diagnosed with a hearing impairment, however, despite this diagnosis she remained focused on achieving her goals.

Ke-anne completed her academic programme in 2016. She is currently employed as a Clerical Officer in the Legal Department of the Central Bank of Barbados and is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Law through the University of London’s online program.

She aspires to become a lawyer and her goal is to support persons with disabilities by influencing the development of policies. Regarding how the Scholarship helped her to attain these personal and professional goals, Ke-anne shared
